Community Development Worker (Co. Cavan) Job Description:
The primary objective of this post is to lead in the development of a Traveller Support Group in Co. Cavan to build their capacity to participate in the decision-making, planning, provision and delivery of appropriate services for their community. This will lead to positive outcomes for the Traveller Community and positively influence and enhance their health and social gain
The Core function of the post holder will be to directly engage with the Traveller community, building a relationship with them in order to support their participation to work in partnership with relevant statutory and non-statutory organisations and agencies in Co. Cavan
Principal Role and Duties:
- To lead in the development of a Traveller Support Group in Co. Cavan and to identify and assist with the group’s development and training needs.
- To support the group to identify and articulate the future development needs of the Traveller community.
- To promote multi agency consultation and co-operation in these identified areas.
- To work with service providers to support the development of culturally appropriate services for Travellers.
- To develop a Three Year Action Plan for the group, based on identified needs, which would take a community development approach in partnership with the Traveller Interagency group.
- To support long-term Traveller involvement on relevant local, regional and national forums, including the Traveller Interagency Committee.
Essential requirement for the post include:
- Thorough knowledge of the issues affecting the Traveller community
- At least 3 years experience of working in a community development context or related area
- Demonstrate a commitment to equality and the principles of Community Development.
- Knowledge and understanding of the local and national policy fora that affect the Traveller community, for example, the County Development Board etc.
- Full Drivers Licence and own transport
- Facilitation skills
A 3rd level qualification in Community Development or related area would be desirable.

Locum Solicitor
Job Description
1. Case Work
- To continue to develop the case work strategy of the Law Centre through case identification and selection
- To represent Travellers on cases of strategic importance to the Traveller community and to ITM
- To liaise with other solicitors taking Traveller cases of strategic importance
- To report to the legal working group on case work and other work
- To liaise with equality infrastructure on cases of particular importance
2. Assisting Travellers and Traveller Groups
- Provide information and advice on legal issues to Travellers and Traveller Groups
- To support Travellers and the ITM to challenge negative legislation
- To develop legal responses of strategic importance to Travellers and to the ITM through submissions to various bills
- To advise on submissions and legal reform provisions made by ITM
- To carry out research as identified
3. Ensuring the development of Travellers access to legal services
- Liase with the Legal Aid Board, Law Centres etc. to design strategies to ensure that legal services meet the needs of and are accessible to the Traveller community
4. Networking
- To link with agencies and organisations which develop policy in relation to Travellers
- To link with other community legal projects and organisations working on human rights and legal issues, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Person Specification
This Person Specification lists only those criteria which we judge to be essential when selecting candidates for interview.
1. QUALIFICATION
Qualified as a Solicitor.
2. SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience advising in many areas of law, particularly litigation (equality, judicial review).
- Advocacy experience before High Court, Circuit Court and District Court.
- Experience of conducting cases through to their conclusion with minimal supervision, briefing counsel as and when necessary.
- Willingness and ability to carry out office management tasks including supervising support staff.
- Knowledge of the Legal Aid Scheme.
- Familiarity with Law Society rules of professional conduct of solicitors.
- An understanding of social policy issues in one area of law and practice.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective negotiating skills.
- Good organisational, administrative and networking skills.
- A willingness to devise and deliver training courses to Traveller Organisations.
- Experience of the areas of law of the Law Centre’s practice or a willingness to acquire the appropriate level of skill in order to deliver a service competently.
