Yellow Flag Pilot Programme

"Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups" Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 26 (2) "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" Nelson Mandela The ITM is striving to achieve equality for Travellers in education: equality of access, participation and outcome. Equality of access, where Travellers can enroll their children in the schools of their choice; equality of participation, where Traveller culture and identity is validated in the school and cultural diversity respected in the curriculum; and equality of outcome, where Travellers will achieve their full potential and attain levels of education similar to the majority population.

Art Competition

Yellow Flag Logo Competition

In November, students from the four pilot schools submitted entries for an art competition to inspire a suitable logo for the Yellow Flag Programme. Entries were judged on the basis of originality, audience appeal and technical suitability for reproduction. We had a great response from all four schools, who displayed immense imagination and effort over the course of a  short submission time.

After careful consideration from a panel of judges, (Paula Madden, Aoife Titley, Eileen McBride, Salma Shaarawy and Louise Daly) designs from Martin Stokes, Aine Daly and Michael O?Riordan were chosen as prize winners. Please see their designs as well as a selection of outstanding runner ups.

Martin Stokes, Age 11, Castaheany Educate Together

It is like the world and has two yellow flags?

Aine Daly, Age 14, Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School

It shows several different cultures can all come together as one unit working together as one.

Michael O?Riordan, Age 17, Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School

It shows people of different races and cultures helping to carry the flag. The road shows a journey.

Debating Competition

Students in the four pilot schools have been taking part in debating workshops since January in preparation for an exhibition debate in April. They have learnt the rules, technicalities and language of debating and why it can be a good tool in intercultural communication

This will give the students the chance to voice their opinions on many different motions relating to culture, diversity and identity as well as the opportunity to meet up with the students from the other pilot schools. Please keep an eye on the website for the time and venue for the exhibition debate.
