ITM Regional Networks

The aim of the ITM Regional Networks

To enable the ongoing engagement with the Movement at a local level, the ITM has a number of Regional Networks- currently operating in the North West, the East/ North East, the South West, the South and the Mid West. They vary greatly in both size and in their activities to meet the needs of local Traveller groups. The networks have a number of functions and are supported by the Membership Development Workers (see contact details below). The Membership Development Workers are employed, for among many strategic aims, to strengthen the capacity of independent Traveller organisations in the membership of ITM to engage effectively at the local, regional and national level and to enhance and support collective action between ITM members in their region (in the regional networks).

The role of the ITM Regional Networks are:

  • Increasing Traveller involvement in, and awareness of, the work of the ITM
  • Feeding local/regional experience into the policy working groups of the ITM
  • Linking Groups/Travellers into structures of ITM
  • Facilitate collective action/solidarity amongst members in their region.
  • Increasing Traveller awareness of initiatives, strategies and campaigns aimed at improving the situation of Travellers in Ireland.
  • Increasing the capacity of Travellers and Traveller organisations to take the advantage of new policies, laws and institutional changes that have the potential to improve the situation for Travellers
  • Providing mutual support for Traveller organisations in the region and supporting the emergence of new Traveller organisations
  • Facilitating the representation interests in appropriate regional structures
  • Building alliances with appropriate actors in the region
  • Promoting the work of Traveller organisations in the region
