Core Principles of the ITM- Working for Travellers Human Rights and Travellers right to self-determination
- Recognition of Travellers as a Minority Ethnic Group
- Recognition and validation of Nomadism
- Travellers are the key stakeholders within the Movement, and their involvement is proactively pursued
- A commitment to creating Traveller-only spaces within the Movement
- Unambiguous and pro-active in relation to Traveller issues and rights
- Solidarity with other marginalised groups and a commitment to challenge racism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia
- Commitment to collective action, challenging structural inequalities, empowerment and participation (Community Development Principles)
- While the ITM will develop policies that aim to work in tandem with State agencies, the ITM space is for Travellers and Traveller organisations only- relationships with other agencies will be built up outside the Movement
- The work of the ITM is to add value to the work of local organisations, provide analysis and support, but never to be seen in competition directly or indirectly with the work of local groups
In order for the ITM to function effectively as a Movement, it depends on a strong engagement from the defined membership of Travellers and Traveller organisations.
Staff are employed to bring groups together and develop a strong collective voice, but they are there to support policy development and support representatives on relevant committees and forums.
